TAILS FROM GREECE RESCUE

WHY HELP STRAYS FROM GREECE?
People ask why I find homes for stray, abandoned and injured animals in Greece when we have animals here needing homes.  Well, having visited Greece many times,
I've witnessed what life as a stray is like there and I felt compelled to help as Greece has no infrastructure regarding stray animals .... no animal control, no humane societies, only a few privately run shelters which can manage to care for only a small number of animals.  These animals are, in every sense of the word, 'strays'!  Many have never lived in a home, been loved or shown compassion.  Adoption of rescued dogs is something the people of Greece are only just beginning to accept as in their minds, stray dogs are dirty.  It's still more common for people to buy a dog from a petshop but then, when they go on holiday, their dog is left on its own to fend for itself; if it's not anywhere to be seen when they return, they get another one from the petshop!  In the meantime, their other dog, which in many instances hasn't been sterilized, is out there making litters.  So, as is often the case when one gets involved with a project close to their heart, the rest is history.  I sincerely thank everyone who supports this effort, be it by adopting, fostering, making a donation, volunteering to do home visits for potential adopters or participating in our fundraising activities.  It is YOU who truly makes a difference in the lives of these animals so I hope you'll find this a worthy cause to support!

PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE AND PROVIDE FOR THE VETERINARY NEEDS OF YOUR PET

A very important, but often overlooked aspect of responsible pet ownership is being financially prepared for veterinary needs for your pets when they arise.
Please consider the Petsecure Health Insurance Program to provide the financial help needed when your pet requires veterinary care.  By doing so, you'll eleviagte some of the financial burden of having to deal with an emergency health concern of your pet and, at the same time, you'll be helping our cause too, as with each activated policy, we'll receive $25.  We all benefit .... you have peace of mind knowing your pet's health needs can be met, as it's always a terrible option when a pet owner has to euthanize their pet because they can't afford the cost associated with treatment that would otherwise make their pet better; and we raise some much needed funds to help continue our rescue efforts!

****VISITORS TO GREECE****
If, during your visit to Greece, you wish to bring home a companion animal, be sure to check on your country's quarantine requirements.  (For example, Canada and the United States, as well as some countries in Europe, have no quarantine requirement for companion animals but the UK does.)
Recommended steps include taking your companion animal to a veterinarian in Greece for vaccinations and other required tests (which may have a 'within so many days of travel' time restriction attached) as well as a Health Certificate showing proof of vaccinations.  Depending on where you are in Greece, a Health Certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture, may also be required.  Your companion animal also needs to be microchipped prior to leaving Greece.  All vet info needs to be recorded in a Pet Passport issued by the vet.   Further down the page you'll find a link to information for bringing companion animals into Canada and the U.S.A. so please review the one relevant to where you live.
Airline reservations need to be confirmed for your companion animal.  Some airlines will allow small pets - puppies or cats - to travel in the passenger cabin within Europe but, for most overseas flights to North America, your companion animal will not be permitted to travel in the passenger cabin.  Overseas flights generally have a climate controlled compartment in cargo for live animals.
There may also be a 'no fly' travel period when they'll not accept a companion animal on board due to extreme temperatures.  Be sure to check with your airline to ensure your companion animal can travel.
Regardless of where you're flying to, your new companion animal must be booked prior to leaving Greece.
It's also recommended that you call your home country Embassy in Athens to confirm you've covered all the necessary requirements.

HOW YOU CAN HELP A STRAY IN GREECE GET A NEW HOME
Even though you may not be in a position to adopt one of the Greek strays yourself, you can help by making a donation to offset the expense incurred to bring a dog or cat to Toronto for rehoming.
Donations can be made by cheque, payable to Tails from Greece Rescue (and mailed to the address at the bottom of this page), at the CanadaHelps.org link above or with Visa, MasterCard or thru the PayPal link on this page.  Please indicate your donation is for the 'Rehoming Fund'.
Ongoing support is urgently needed and very much appreciated!
Thank you for caring!!

Consider Being a Foster Family
If you would like to be a temporary foster home for one of our dogs or cats coming over from Greece, and you live in the GTA or within a 2 hr drive of Toronto, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca to register as a foster family.
Having a foster home available means the dog or cat could leave Greece sooner as well as making the adoption process a little easier in that a pre-approved family could meet the dog before committing to the adoption.
The dogs & cats are vetted prior to leaving Greece.
Thank you for giving this idea some thought and helping us during the process of rehoming some needy dogs and cats.

Background Information
I live in Toronto, Canada and hold memberships in several animal protection groups; volunteer at BayCat & BayDog Hospital; and am a member of CIDAG - Coalition in Defense of Animals in Greece. Was a volunteer and worked as a shelter employee at our local humane society for several years.  I also network locally with several animal rescue groups to find transport for rescue groups across Ontario and crosspost the need for foster/permanent homes for local rescuers.  When I'm not helping animals, I'm a financial analyst for a major insurance company and share my home with 4 cats and my husband, George.
